Wind Turbines brochure(PDF) Horizontal Wind Turbine

We offer a range of horizontal wind turbines capable of generating 1.6 - 14.5 kW. All of our turbines feature a strong steel structure, with all steel parts hot dipped galvanised for years of rust protection. Also all steel structures meet the new challenges facing wind generators caused by global warming.

All models feature a nice smooth aerodynamic gel coated body. Each body is a two piece design with one side removable for access. 1.6kW turbine can produce an average 3,942 kWh per year, saving 3,390 Kg of CO2 emissions each year.

**These figures are a guide only, as exact output will always vary depending on the unique circumstances of each wind turbine system and its location.

A junction box is fitted to the bottom of each steel body where a dry clean connection can be made from the generator to the tower.

How do wind turbines work?

A wind turbine works in the opposite way to a fan. Instead of using electricity to make wind, a turbine uses wind to make electricity. The wind turns the blades, which spins a shaft, which connects to a generator and makes electricity.

Wind Turbines are electric generators that utilize wind energy to produce clean, emissions-free power for individual homes, farms, and small businesses. A wind turbine has rotating blades that convert the winds kinetic energy into rotational momentum in a shaft. The rotating shaft turns an alternator, which makes electricity.

This electricity is transmitted through wiring down the tower to a controller which converts the three phase variable alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). This direct current is then converted back to Single Phase AC by an inverter which is the normal electrical supply format for domestic houses. That means your Wind Turbine is supplying electricity to your home through the existing circuit board where it is connected with it’s own fuse.

The CareyGlass wind turbines are especially chosen for the Irish environment. With low cut in speeds they will generate electricity even on calm days. They are also robust enough to withstand storm conditions.

Tourbine Positioning

The turbine location is a very important factor in the overall performance of your small wind turbine system. Good site selection will maximise the power that your turbine will be able to deliver. The Wind Turbine should be installed not only in a high-wind area, but also far enough from buildings, treetops, fences, etc.

The height of a turbine tower is an important element to consider and should have into account the height of the surrounding obstructions. The image below shows how wind obstructions may act and the way to avoid them.

Planning

All of the CareyGlass Wind turbines meet the following planning regulations:

  • Height below 13m
  • Noise level less than 43dbA
  • Turbine is to be placed 13 metres from the nearest boundary of the property.

Benefits

  • Reduce carbon emissions
  • Reduce or eliminate electricity bills
  • Increased security of electricity supply
  • Protection against price rises
  • Gain income from the sale of surplus electricity to ESB
  • An investment that will pay for itself well within its lifetime
  • Our turbines are among the quietest on the market.

With operating noise levels of less than 40 dbA for some, they can be quieter than your washing machine!
